Apparently, Running 96-98 2.4L engines don't exist in ANY junkyards (I was told this by some a**hole in a Taylor yard Thumbs Down). But even with that bunch of bs, they are very hard to come by. So my concern is with using a 2.4 from either a 99, or a 00-02. I notice that as I search for engines, the 99s are plentiful, and the 00-02's are even more so.

I would like to know what it would take to fit a later model 2.4 into my car.

with the 99's I understand that I would need to modify accordingly:
EGR (Would I need a sim? I'm planning on running an HO manifold when I change the engines over).
Injectors (Not sure how this would work out either)?
Fuel Rail?
anything else....again, I'm not sure of the differences at all, and any help in what would need to be modified would be greatly appreciated.
Knock Sensor?

00-02's....Well, I haven't looked into it at all...and in fact any help would do. I'm just getting overly bent out of shape lately and alot of it's stemming from my car being garaged and hurt for a few months now.

Having same problem. I have a 96 which I understand is not the same as a 95 or 97-99 I was told a 97-99 would work with an oil pan and Intake swap...but that was from a junkyard guy trying to sell an engine so not sure. I have not found any info on the net for this

96-99 are the same
99-03 can be installed as well with some minor changes
95 is not the same at all.

I Just installed a 02 2.4 in my 98 its pretty darn easy. Installing a 99 is the same.

Here are the main differences.

  • Knock Sensor is different. 00+ Knock sensor is Smaller, so you will have to RETAP&redrill knock sensor hole(thats what i did, there are other methods)

  • Pre-2000 Intake Manifold has a EGR Pipe going from bottom to front right of block. I went to a junkyard and got a 00+ Intake, you can also cut the EGR Pipe and cap it with a plastic cap

  • PRE-00 Exhaust manifold has a EGR Port on it. I just used a double gaskset and kepet my old Exhaust manifold.

Note to what Todd Said 96-99 are the same technically (got rid of egr in 99, different knock etc) The only difference is the electronics. 99 was a transition year for 2.4 to the 00 Electronics(so was 96 i think and a few others)

Weird thing to note, my 00+ engine i got had the EGR port on the front of the head open and not blocked or sealed. The back of the head did not have the EGR Port. So i just reused my Block-off Plate that i user for the supercharger kit.

Dont understand why you would have a problem with injectors or fuel rail? The injector ports on the all model years 2.4 are the same size. The only difference is 99+ they switched to a newer style injector. If your just putting in a engine your gonna pretty much keep all the electronics.

Everything plugged right in.
